7 Best Neighborhoods in Austin for Young Professionals

Austin, Texas is a great city for young professionals. The city has seen a rapid increase in the need for housing and businesses with this influx of new Austinites moving to the area. Austin has been ranked as one of the best places to live, play, work and raise a family.

Here is a list of the best neighborhoods for young professionals to live in.

1. West Campus

Another great neighborhood in Austin that offers young professionals the ability to be near local bars, restaurants, and coffee shops while also having quick access to public transportation, highways, and easy commute time into downtown Austin. West Campus is a little further from some of the other neighborhoods on this list but it is still a convenient location for those new graduates looking at possible rental options while they attend school or work in Austin’s workforce.

West Austin is close to Lake Austin and Barton Springs Pool, which are two incredibly popular outdoor swimming areas in Austin.

2. Downtown Austin

Downtown Austin is one of the most popular neighborhoods for young professionals because it offers easy access to public transportation, highways, grocery stores, shopping centers, work locations, bars/restaurants, entertainment venues including the state capital building and Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater (ACL), popular outdoor swimming areas like Barton Springs Pool that are located on Lady Bird Lake just south of Downtown Austin where you can swim, relax, or soak the sun.

3. Barton Hills/Zilker Neighborhoods

These neighborhoods are located in South Austin, in one of the hippiest and trendiest areas of the city. South Austin’s Barton Hills/Zilker Park areas are close to Downtown Austin but still offer a more laid-back vibe while giving you access to all that Austin has to offer. These neighborhoods also provide convenient access to residents coming in and out from the South to other parts of the city.

4. Cherrywood

The Cherrywood neighborhood is an Austin community filled with families and professionals. Located east of MoPac Expressway between Mopac and 290, the neighborhood is centrally located to both Downtown Austin and Austin–Bergstrom International Airport.

The area holds a wide range of housing options including duplexes, condominiums, brick ranch-style homes, cottages, bungalows, and Victorian homes. It offers easy access to retail shops at Lamar Boulevard/Riverside Drive as well as fast-food restaurants on East Riverside Drive.

5. Hyde Park

A relaxed neighborhood nestled among huge trees and sidewalks. It’s also one of the most walkable neighborhoods in Austin, TX. The community is part of Austin’s historical Hyde Park neighborhood which now runs from 38th Street to Koenig Lane and covers more than 2,500 acres. It offers access to fine dining at La Condesa or sushi at Uchiko, both of which are located west of Duval Street.

Hyde Park residents enjoy easy access to Zilker Park for recreation; some favorite activities include taking dogs for a walk at the Barton Creek Dog Park, watching water ski shows at Pace Bend Park, or launching personal watercraft into Lake Austin these recreational opportunities shows the area is one of the areas for the best places for young professionals in Austin.

6. Milwood

Another well-established neighborhood in North Austin making it our list of the best places for young professionals. With Austin Community College, the Austin History Center, and Austin Public Library all located within its boundaries, Milwood is home to many young professionals looking for housing near public amenities.

Milwood residents have their own local pool at Mary Moore Searight Metropolitan Park as well as a community center with an outdoor pool. The neighborhood hosts several annual events including a Mardi Gras parade, Halloween celebration, and Chili Cook-Off. In addition to these family-friendly events, Milwood also hosts some of Austin’s best First Friday celebrations with restaurants and galleries open until midnight.

7. Mueller

Mueller is known as a mixed-use urban village. Located in Austin’s growing north, the neighborhood looks much like a well-planned college town. Development began in 1998 and continues to this day. This master-planned community is home to Mueller Lake Park along with parks for children and adults of all ages where they can enjoy the amenities and other recreation facilities in the community.

Mueller Austin is just minutes away from great entertainment venues, Austin attractions, fine dining, and shopping at The Domain, Austin’s premier shopping, and entertainment destination.
